Durban, 19 June 2025 – The City of Durban rolled out the red carpet for the stars of its tourism sector during the 4th Annual Durban Tourism Business Awards, held last night at the prestigious Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre.

Hosted by Durban Tourism, the awards ceremony honoured innovation, resilience, and excellence within the local tourism industry — shining a spotlight on businesses that are helping to position Durban as a leading tourism and investment destination.

This year’s awards attracted 161 entries across a wide range of categories, including accommodation, events, crafts, tour guiding, and green innovation. After a rigorous adjudication process, finalists were selected, reflecting the diverse and dynamic nature of the city’s tourism offerings.

eThekwini Mayor Councillor Cyril Xaba lauded the growth in submissions and the sector’s continued commitment to innovation.

“We’re pleased with the increased participation, particularly in the Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) category, which rose from 30% to 62%. We also saw a doubling of entries in the Filmmakers and the Universally Accessible and Green Sustainability Award categories — a testament to the industry’s growing focus on inclusivity and environmental responsibility,” said Xaba.

The highlight of the evening was the announcement of winners in 17 competitive categories. Victors walked away with cash prizes of up to R50,000, while first and second runners-up received R35,000 and R25,000 respectively. Winners of the Exceptional Achievement Award secured an international study tour valued at R100,000 and comprehensive marketing support to further elevate their businesses.

Among the standout winners was Simon Sibiya, a beloved rickshaw puller known for his vibrant presence on Durban’s promenade, who received the Best Rickshaw Award.

“This award means so much to me. It motivates me to keep delivering the best experience to every visitor who rides with me,” said Sibiya.

In the accommodation categories, Coastlands uMhlanga claimed the top prize in the Hotel and MICE category, while View Boutique Hotel and Spa was recognised in the Non-Hotel Accommodation category.

Chairperson of the Economic Development and Planning Committee, Councillor Thembo Ntuli, commended all winners and finalists for their unwavering dedication.

“These businesses are the heartbeat of our tourism economy. Their resilience and excellence contribute meaningfully to Durban’s economic growth. Tonight’s recognition is well-deserved,” Ntuli said.

Past winners have highlighted how the awards have helped grow their businesses, with many reinvesting prize money into expansion and improvement. The added exposure has also expanded their customer base and strengthened their industry networks.
