Durban’s Investment Climate boosted as Westown Square Opens

EThekwini Municipality Mayor, Cllr Cyril Xaba, will officially open the Westown Square tomorrow the 27th March 2025. This is a Catalytic Project, deemed to be the 1st phase of the ‘New City of the West, in Shongweni, west of Durban.

This is the first phase of a further mixed-use development and investment in the region that includes a residential estate, hospital, business and commercial parks, and more. Fundamentum Property Group invested R1.5 billion into the development of Westown Square, while the city contributions for bulk infrastructure amounted to R600 million over 3 years.

INVESTMENT


It is set to generate some R15 billion in investment over the next 10 to 15 years, create 15 000 construction jobs, 8 500 permanent jobs. This Catalytic Project is supported by the eThekwini Municipality, KwaZulu-Natal Department of Economic Development, Tourism & Environmental Affairs, and National Government. 

Successful Private-Public partnerships generate thousands of jobs and many are yet to be created. The quality of life is expected to also improve. This project serves as an indication of what can be achieved when government works together with the private sector.

TOURISM


Westown is perfectly positioned between Durban and Pietermaritzburg on the main arterial N3 highway, 30km from Durban Port, 50km from PMB and 56km from King Shaka airport. Its location is set to enhance the regional offering with a shopping, lifestyle, entertainment, and business destination. Accessibility to KwaZulu Natal’s Midlands ,immediate 1000 Hills Tourism route and Destination Durban is expected to boost visitor interest into the area. Yithabantu Media spoke to a Tourism Investment Analyst Sthandiwe Mkhize and he said “ This public-private partnership is a significant boost for the regional economy. For such investment to sustain the long-term social and economic benefits there needs to be concerted efforts for collaboration amongst all stakeholders. eThekwini Municipality and all stakeholders must be commended creating an enabling investment climate ”.

eThekwini Municipality’s Catalytic Projects Unit was commended for successfully facilitating this development. Part of the Unit’s mandate is to facilitate large scale spatial transformation projects in partnership with the private sector. The investment value for these projects are usually more than R500 million and they contribute substantially to job creation and economic growth in the region.

There is music in the air as Westown Square gears up for its launch on the 27th March 2025.
